Many FBI experts believed, at first, all this nation-wide destruction had been the work of ALF or ELF cells - groups it had identified as the #1 domestic terrorist organizations. Others had their own suspects: Kinky Friedman, a bizarre gubernatorial candidate from Texas; offshoots of the American Nazi party; some even suspected a band of retired U.S. military generals, many of whom had openly criticized Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld's leadership over the past few years, might have played a role in this devastation. Certainly they had the necessary technical experience to help make it happen.
Loyal members of the Bush administration, as could be expected, blamed the same international terrorists who had devastated this country on September 11, 2001. The demolition of the twin World Trade Center towers, afterall, was the one event on which George W. Bush had hung his hat; 9-11 had become his mascot, his reason for invading Iraq. For years, each speech about terrorism made reference to that tragic event. Curiously, and without much notice, Bush never made equal mention of the coinciding explosion that rocked the Pentagon when a plane was torpedoed into the side of what Americans believed had to be the most secure place on the planet. Witnessing 9-11 from his 24th-floor vantagepoint in one of the twin towers at 1000-1001 Wilson Blvd. in Arlington, Virginia (former headquarters of the Gannett Co., Inc. and its flagship newspaper, USA Today), one man had said with astonishment, "I really thought if any building in America was shielded from such an attack, it would have been the Pentagon! I guess I just assumed if a misguided airplane or missle came within range of blowing up our military command headquarters, steel walls might come up from the ground or ICBMs might be launched. I never realized how vulnerable that building was until I saw what happened with my own eyes."
Now, seven years after 9-11, it became painfully evident that Homeland Security had done precious little to protect America from any outside or domestic terrorist activity. This catastrophic event had been choreographed by what appeared to be a bunch of "common" American citizens, who were now ready to impose their own agenda on the American people. From all immediate indications, it appeared that none of these individuals had prior criminal records; they seemed to be people who went to work everyday, paid their taxes, mowed their lawns, and raised their children to be law-abiding citizens.
What this group of people (and no one knew, at this point, how large an organization this might be) had brazenly achieved was beyond comprehension.
Homeland Security officials were frantically trying to gather what little data they could on these fifty individuals appearing on the videotape. With most of the federal government's computers destroyed, collecting such data was close to impossible. "This was no Boston Tea Party," he remarked with a George Bush-like bravado, "this was a military-style precision exercise planned down to the most minute detail. These people, whoever they are, have staged the world's most horrendously violent act ever imposed upon the United States. We will use every resource available to ensure these savages are apprehended and punished to the full extent of the law."
Television and radio stations, as well as newspapers around the country, had posted the locations of hundreds of public meetings, where citizens would be invited to listen to what was going to happen next. It seemed risky...what could prevent what was left of the military to simply retaliate by showing up at those meetings and arresting those presiding over the meetings? In this hi-tech era of teleconferencing, the fifty individuals were clearly able to conduct these meetings without ever appearing "live" and in person. While millions of Americans were appalled by the vast destruction - and the scope of the attack - many were also impressed - perhaps 'affected' would be a better word - by what they heard on the tapes, or what they'd read in their newspapers. So, four days after the most cataclysmic man-made disaster in this history of the United States, millions of people filed into designated meeting places, perhaps more out of a fearful curiosity than anything else.
All meetings were scheduled for the same time: 4:55 p.m. EST.
It's important to understand a curious component: government offices, banks, corporate headquarters of America's largest companies, military posts, and homes of the wealthy and powerful had all been methodically blown to bits, all at the exact same moment (ironically, 4;55 p.m. EST). But the rest of the country was still doing "business as usual". Grocery stores, fast-food restaurants, airports, taverns, barber shops, local farms, advertising agencies, car dealerships, gas stations, and millions of other small businesses were still able to operate. On the video and audio tapes, and in the newspaper press releases, these local, independent business owners were encouraged to continue to conduct business, and were ensured they would not be the target of further attacks. In fact, most of these public meetings were being held in some of these very same businesses, which might lead one to suspect that many of these businesspeople were also part of the larger group who had participated in the wholesale killing of thousands of federal government bureaucrats, elected federal officials, and mega-rich business executives and celebrities.
As the public meetings began, the same fifty people appeared on large-screen TVs and - in unison - made their opening statement: "We come before you in peace. You are in no danger. We are asking for your voluntary commitment to our cause. Please hear us out, then make your own decision. Thank you for your attention."
As in the first videotape, the group of fifty individuals now talked directly to each audience, saying what they wanted to say and speaking only when and if they so chose. This did not appear in any way to be rehearsed or scripted. Here were fifty individuals explaining their despicable actions, and trying - it seemed - to make sense of it all, even amongst themselves.
One matronly woman from Delaware quietly spoke up and said, "What we did might appear to most of you to be terribly wrong. But you must understand our mission, and you must recognize that it was the only way..." As her voice trailed off, a young man from Missouri looked into the camera and snarled, "It's simple: if gangrene is infecting your leg and doctors know it's going to spread to the rest of your body, you know you must amputate that leg. If you don't, the diseased limb will continue to spread and the dying tissue will ultimately consume your entire body...and you will die. For fifty years, Americans have allowed a vicious disease to infect this country. As it continued to spread, the United States of America continued to wither...and, eventually, this country was going to die. We couldn't let that happen...and we think a majority of you will agree with us and understand why we did what had to be done. It was the only way to save our country."
Someone in the group, blocked from view by others standing in front of him, tried to clarify things for the viewers. "I'm from Pennsylvania," he said. "Like millions of Americans, I used to sit around in bars and bitch about the pathetic state of American politics and America's big business. I'd vote in every election, but nothing changed. The Republicrats are all the same. The U.S. Congress has become nothing more than a bureaucratic house of prostitution, where the whores make deals that enrich themselves and guarantee their re-election to a cushy job for life. Washington's politicians have sucked the life out of America and have abandoned the constituency that elected them to serve. Decades ago, these people have forgotten that they are public servants, not majestic royalty. It doesn't matter whether you're a Republican or Democrat; our elected officials, our government bureaucrats, and even most government employees don't see themselves as servants of the people. They see themselves as some kind of authoritative individuals who deserve more, and who expect to be revered as superior to the "common" citizen. They enjoy better benefits, more job security, and earn higher wages...and they're supposed to be our servants!"
He was cut off by the one person in the group from California. "We're here to start fresh...to return our land to its roots....to bring back the original intent of our Constitution, and reinstate our Declaration of Independence. I'm tired of being overtaxed just so our politicians can piss away trillions of dollars without any accountability. I'm tired of lawmakers passing laws that we must obey, and yet they believe themselves to be above. I'm tired of big business executives who plunder millions of dollars from a corporation only to leave the workers without jobs, without pensions, and without a future. These people are evil...they all deserved to die."
A middle-aged black man from Mississippi stood up and said, "I know many of you watching this today believe what we did was inhumane and immoral. We could have broadcast this forum over the airwaves, just as we did our first message. But we felt it was imperative that numbers of you were together as you listened to this instead of sitting in your own living rooms. We need your support, understanding and cooperation in order to accomplish our goals. We hope you will listen to us, then - as a group - make your decision to join in our endeavor or oppose our efforts. We call ourselves the Oppressed, United Taxpayers Revolting Against Government Excesses. The acronymn is OUTRAGE! Our objective is a return to the basics. We want to bring our America back to the democracy our forefathers fought for; we must reinstate our personal freedoms and take the power away from our federal government. Government is supposed to serve the people, not burden them. Our political process has become a cesspool of indecency, immorality, and evil. What we did was just as indecent, immoral, and evil. But we did what we believe had to be done for the betterment of our society and the future of our children. We hope you will stand with us and help us accomplish those lofty goals."
O.U.T.R.A.G.E. - a fresh political organization destined to finally destroy the stranglehold Republicrats have held on America for more than a hundred years - was being born. An incredible new beginning was showing signs of bloom as the vile stench of death still lingered over many parts of the country.
